First trailer for The Rise, the sequel to The Cure

In 2005, the game The Cure was submitted to the MSXdev contest, which ultimately won that edition.

The Cure was a full-fledged homage to Konami's legendary Vampire Killer , where its protagonist brandished a whip to kill bugs, just like Simon Belmont did. But The Cure also had its own personality. XL2S Entertainment managed to pack into just 48Kb a great action and platform game for the first generation MSX that surprised us all almost 20 years ago. How time flies!

Now, the first trailer for the sequel to The Cure is coming to our screens, which this time is called The Rise , also by XL2S Entertainment, picking up on the previous story a few years later.

And it does so with the same successful recipe of platforms, exploration, jumping and fighting . During the adventure our character will visit different scenarios within a vast interconnected world. He will have to face common enemies and other larger and more complicated ones, but he will have the help of his whip and also a secondary shot. During the exploration process, it will be necessary to activate mechanisms to open new paths and also engage in conversations with some key characters in the story.

The Rise runs on virtually any MSX (with a minimum of 64Kb of RAM) although it has some slight differences if run on MSX2, such as, for example, the limitation of the number of sprites in line and the change of the color palette.

The trailer shows the wonderful work done on the graphics, with outstanding enemy and scenery design . But in addition to the great graphics, the soundtrack promises much joy once you hear the melodies composed for SCC+ that play during the presentation in the video.

There is still work to be done, so I don't think The Rise will be released anytime soon. However, with what we've seen already, the bar is set very high.

If you haven't tried The Cure yet, what are you waiting for? You can download it from the MSXdev website .

openMSX updated with new interface (v 20.0) openMSX is the oldest MSX emulator . It's been with us for many years, and while it's had a reputation for being somewhat cumbersome to use by some less experienced users (myself included), today it's by far the best alternative to using a real machine. Throughout its existence, it has had to compete with other competitors (fMSX, ruMSX, MarsMSX Meisei, BlueMSX, etc.) that haven't made things easy for it. The latter, BlueMSX, was my choice for a long time due to its user-friendly interface and ease of use, without having to install the BIOS for the different MSX models ( System ROMs ), for example. When BlueMSX stopped being updated, I decided to give openMSX a try, better understanding how it worked in order to take full advantage of the huge number of options it has. This way, I managed to forget about BlueMSX and embrace openMSX as my favorite emulator to this day. This version 20.0 of openMSX debuts a new graphical user interface that is a complete revolution. The debugger and Catapult, which until now were separate programs, are now integrated into the emulator itself . Although they will continue to be available for download from the emulator's official website, the team has already announced that they will no longer be updating them. All the options of these Catapult and the debugger are integrated into openMSX. In addition, all the other options offered by the emulator are now accessible via a menu bar at the top of the screen. It couldn't be more convenient and simple. I'm very glad that openMSX has taken the path of being more user-friendly with an interface that, while not spectacular, more than meets expectations in a program like this. The path has already been laid out, and we'll see how it evolves in upcoming updates. A full description of the updates and changes made in this version can be found at this link .
