The Pico MSX hardware cartridge introduces new features, including enhanced background music through software patches for old games. The MSX Game Wave collection series aims to provide a fresh experience for playing classic games with this feature. The patches are free to download, making them accessible to everyone.
The Pico cartridge, created by Jeroen Taverne, is an MSX extension loaded with an array of impressive features. It’s more than just a flash ROM; it offers multiple audio interfaces, modern storage, mapper support, network connections, and other outputs. The MSX Pico+ is the latest version, boasting upgrades like a faster CPU, improved audio quality, and more. This plus version is at the heart of the new Wave Game Collection.
Brazilian MSX fanatic Maurício da Motta Braga, aka Mauk, collaborated with Jeroen to introduce new software for the MSX Pico+ cartridge: modified MSX games featuring wave music instead of the traditional PSG music. The MSX Game Wave collection is a series of patches designed to bring a new experience playing classic games. So far, a few games are already patched and going through tests and adjustments to be released.
The first available patch is for the classic Konami MSX game Goonies. The Goones Wave Edition patch, with music from Jorrith Schaap (aka Jorito) and Riva Lima (StereoKromatik) can be downloaded and applied to the original Goonies ROM file. It replaces the original PSG music with new tracks in WAVE format. Sound effects remain being played by PSG. As an added bonus, an enhanced colour palette is used when running in a MSX2 computer. At the time of writing, Yie Ar Kung-Fu has also been added to the list and will be available at Mauk his website soon.
To play the patched game, You will need a MSX Pico+ cartridge with 2.05 or newer firmware.
