PSG Explorer utility gets new version – Clube MSX Magazine

PSG Explorer , a teaching tool that allows you to “browse” through the PSG (Programmable Sound Generator, the MSX’s native sound chip) to explore interesting sounds, has just gained a new version.

The changes in version 1.2 of PSG Explorer, originally released by Clube MSX magazine in 2019, are mainly aesthetic, such as the inclusion of a color palette optimized for MSX2 or higher. The tool can be downloaded for free here (48 kB ROM). Below, you can check out a demonstration video of the new version.

In the video, you can hear sounds similar to the car's acceleration in Road Fighter (Konami, 1985). Towards the end, there is a sound reminiscent of the truck in American Truck (Telenet, 1985) when it stops on the shoulder of the road.

PSG Explorer 1.2 – Changes in the new version:

• Now in Screen 2 screen mode (previously Screen 1);
• The command list on the right side has been reorganized;
• Color palette optimized for MSX2 or higher;
• Switch between the new palette and the default one with keys 1 and 2;
• On MSX2 or higher micros, the new color palette is displayed automatically.

About PSG

A programmable sound generator (PSG) is a sound chip that generates or synthesizes audio signals from one or more basic waveforms, often combining some form of noise as well. The PSG uses a relatively simple method of sound creation, compared to more advanced techniques such as frequency modulation (FM) synthesis or pulse code modulation (PCM). Many PSGs offer three channels of tone and one channel of noise, including such well-known models as the AY-3-8910 (which integrates the PSG of the MSX), SN76489 and MOS Technology 6581 .

Although PSG on the MSX was simpler compared to other sound technologies that would emerge later, such as frequency modulation used in FM-PAC , it played a key role in creating classic sounds in iconic MSX titles such as Knightmare , Penguin Adventure , Zanac and Metal Gear .
