Shamus , the classic maze action game released for Atari 8-bit computers in the early 1980s, has been ported to the MSX1 by Mexican developer Oscar Toledo G. (AKA nanochess ). The title was originally developed by Cathryn Mataga and published by Synapse Software in 1982, and was later ported to systems such as the Commodore 64 , VIC-20 , Apple II , IBM PC , and PCjr .

Inspired by Berzerk , Shamus puts the player in control of an armed character who must explore four levels composed of dozens of interconnected rooms.

Each stage is inhabited by randomly generated enemies, as well as the villain Shadow , who appears from time to time to increase the challenge. The goal is to survive the constant onslaught of these enemies, collect items, and find the exit from each maze.

The MSX version of Shamus

The new MSX1 version was recreated by Oscar Toledo G. using CVBasic , a BASIC language cross-compiler he developed to facilitate the creation of games on classic consoles and microcomputers. The project began with the adaptation of Shamus for the Colecovision , made from gameplay videos and maps already published by fans, and was later recompiled for other platforms, including the MSX1 , Spectravideo , Creativision , Sega SG-1000 and other systems of the same generation.

For the MSX, the game was adapted to the resolution of 256×192 pixels and preserves the fast and difficult gameplay of the original, including the soundtrack based on the song Funeral March of a Marionette , known for being the theme of the Alfred Hitchcock series.

The Shamus ROM for MSX1 — as well as adaptations for ColecoVision, CreatiVision, SpectraVideo, SEGA SG-1000 and other systems — can be downloaded from the developer's official website.

Tip: To make the character shoot, use the spacebar. But pressing the spacebar isn't enough; you also need to point in the direction you want to shoot using the arrow keys. To shoot to the right, press the right arrow key and the spacebar. The same applies to diagonal shots.
