The Goonies enhanced | MSX Resource Center

NOP just released its enhanced version of “The Goonies”, originally released in 1986. Using their custom compiler, they’ve been able to modify the game and introduce some exciting enhancements; most notably enhancements on the sound department.

The improvements were implemented without relying on modern technology. The game runs entirely on your ordinary MSX-1, released in 1983. Of course you will need extensions like a MegaflashROM or Carnivore, since the ROM is quite big…

The primary enhancement is a complete overhaul of the audio system. NOP replaced the original sounds with music and sound effects based on samples. The new music is sourced directly from the movie of the same name. And it means a lot of samples: 6 minutes of music and 2 minutes of sound effects and voice samples. “The Goonies Enhanced” is a technical showcase and shows the possibilities of the sample routines that NOP wrote. All audio samples and effects are mixed in real-time at 6 kHz on a 3.57 MHz Z80 CPU.
