Nightstalker, a new game for MSX2 is in development

The developer group Bad Landed will debut in our beloved Japanese standard with the upcoming release of its debut Nightstalker – Shadow of the Ancestors . This is how they have presented it today in a trailer with gameplay on the Jorito YouTube channel:

After picking my jaw up from the floor, the first thing that comes to mind is that Nightstalker is very strongly inspired by Konami's vampire saga Castlevania , specifically the first games for MSX and NES but also a bit by the later releases for Game Boy Advance and Nintendo DS. And this, far from being a criticism, is a good thing.

Once we know the models that inspired it, the game promises us an adventure full of jumps between platforms and enemies to shoot down. And after passing a certain number of levels, enemy bosses will make their appearance and we will have to soften their backs with good whiplashes. Speaking of the whip, this mythical weapon is not the only one available in the game, but we can also pick up others such as a knife, boomerang, Molotov cocktail and axe. During our exploration of the scenarios, it will sometimes be necessary to obtain different objects to be able to open paths, as the canons of a true metroidvania dictate. Of course, in order not to get lost we have the possibility of consulting the map by pressing a key.

Nightstalker looks great, both in terms of graphics (which are outstanding) with colorful sprites and highly detailed environments. It also has great gameplay, with fluid character movement and a soundtrack that makes use of SCC sound that evokes memories of a bygone era.

Nightstalker looks set to become a real blockbuster . And it will be so on its own merits, because it has quality and not just because it is inspired by a successful and well-known saga.

The game will be released in megaROM format for MSX2 with a minimum of 64Kb of RAM and 128Kb of VRAM. I don't know if it will be in physical, digital or both formats. We'll wait and see.

It seems that Castlevania is in fashion . If the other day I talked about The Rise by XL2S Entertainment, now it's the turn of Nightstalker- Shadow of the Ancestors. Things are looking very, very good.

openMSX updated with new interface (v 20.0) openMSX is the oldest MSX emulator . It's been with us for many years, and while it's had a reputation for being somewhat cumbersome to use by some less experienced users (myself included), today it's by far the best alternative to using a real machine. Throughout its existence, it has had to compete with other competitors (fMSX, ruMSX, MarsMSX Meisei, BlueMSX, etc.) that haven't made things easy for it. The latter, BlueMSX, was my choice for a long time due to its user-friendly interface and ease of use, without having to install the BIOS for the different MSX models ( System ROMs ), for example. When BlueMSX stopped being updated, I decided to give openMSX a try, better understanding how it worked in order to take full advantage of the huge number of options it has. This way, I managed to forget about BlueMSX and embrace openMSX as my favorite emulator to this day. This version 20.0 of openMSX debuts a new graphical user interface that is a complete revolution. The debugger and Catapult, which until now were separate programs, are now integrated into the emulator itself . Although they will continue to be available for download from the emulator's official website, the team has already announced that they will no longer be updating them. All the options of these Catapult and the debugger are integrated into openMSX. In addition, all the other options offered by the emulator are now accessible via a menu bar at the top of the screen. It couldn't be more convenient and simple. I'm very glad that openMSX has taken the path of being more user-friendly with an interface that, while not spectacular, more than meets expectations in a program like this. The path has already been laid out, and we'll see how it evolves in upcoming updates. A full description of the updates and changes made in this version can be found at this link .
